The Vision

We want to be known as a historical, welcoming, multi-generational, united, family of believers rooted in Scripture and growing in faith. Our vision is to create a space that highlights these distinctives, and to create an environment that encourages our mission to transform lives in Jesus Christ. Stories of Faith and Gratitude

We all have a story to tell about what Bethel means to us—a testimony of faith, friendship, and God’s goodness at work in our lives. During this season of transition and renewal, let’s encourage one another by sharing those stories and celebrating how God continues to shape our church family.

The reflections below come from dear friends whose lives were forever touched by their time at Bethel. Though many now live elsewhere, their experiences remind us of the lasting impact this church has had, and continues to have, on all who call it home.

Our Building & Redesign Team

At Bethel, we believe our church is more than a building — it’s a place where faith, friendship, and service come to life. The Building and Redesign Team has dedicated countless hours in prayer, planning, and collaboration to ensure that our campus reflects our mission and supports our ministries for generations to come.

This team listened carefully to the needs of our congregation — through group sessions, surveys with Aspen, and open discussions — they worked faithfully to move the project forward so that Bethel can continue to grow and serve.

The Story of Bethel’s Building Campaign

For more than 200 years, Bethel Presbyterian Church has served as a place of worship, community, and growth. In recent years, our congregation has prayerfully considered how our buildings can continue to reflect our mission to welcome, witness, and serve in Christ’s name.

Early Conversations

Three years ago, under the Session’s direction, a team led by Roger Morris began studying the future of Bethel Haven. As the group reviewed the facility, they realized that the church’s needs extended beyond one building. The focus shifted to how the entire campus could better support ministry, fellowship, and outreach.

A Fire That Sparked Reflection

In October 2023, a fire in the Preschool area forced a difficult choice: either close the Preschool permanently or rebuild it to meet modern codes. This event underscored the urgency of addressing not just the damaged area but the overall safety, functionality, and future of Bethel’s facilities.

Forming the Building and Redesign Team

The Session responded by creating a Building and Redesign Team, chaired by Joe Roy, to lead a comprehensive study of Bethel’s campus. Their charge was to identify both immediate needs and long-term opportunities for growth and community impact. The Building Team members were chosen for their experience and expertise in building, finance and history with Bethel. They are all members at Bethel.

Partnering with The Aspen Group

To guide the process, Bethel partnered with The Aspen Group, a firm experienced in church design and planning who conducted an Aspen Group Discovery Workshop. The entire church was invited to participate in a Group Discovery Workshop sponsored by The Aspen Group on September 3, 2024, on the church campus.

At this workshop we had the opportunity to hear directly from the Aspen team and to participate in a guided discussion regarding campus improvements and ministry impact. The feedback focused on ministry effectiveness, hospitality, accessibility, and flexibility—forming the foundation for a new master plan.

Developing a Master Plan

After reviewing Aspen’s recommendations, the Building Team refined the plan in partnership with Session and began exploring implementation through local architects and contractors. Every proposal was measured against ministry goals, budget considerations, and long-term stewardship.

With Gratitude

Please join us in thanking our Building and Redesign Team for their faithful leadership, countless hours of service, and steadfast commitment to God’s work through Bethel Presbyterian Church.

“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.”

Growing in Faith FAQs

Vision & Purpose

Our vision is rooted in stewardship, ensuring we responsibly manage and enhance our facilities to better serve our congregation, community and future generations.  For over 200 years, this church has stood as a beacon of light, firmly rooted in Scripture and bearing the spiritual fruit of lives transformed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Now, we enter a new season of growth—not just in membership or ministry scope, but in our faith, character, and mission. Our current spaces have served us well but need improvements to meet today’s needs and tomorrow’s opportunities.  In addition, because of the October 2023 fire in the Children’s Ministry building, we needed to bring our building up to code to continue operating the Bethel Weekday Preschool Program.  And with that as a driver, we also intend to create an accessible and foundational Worship space, an obvious front door and gathering space, new learning and administrative rooms, and reclaim the gymnasium for sports.  These upgrades  are like planting trees that our future generations will be able to sit in the shade of.  These renovations will glorify God by:

  • Allowing better access to our facilities
  • Ensuring our spaces support efforts to be welcoming and friendly
  • Providing an updated space conducive to worship regardless of style
  • Supplying a hub where Biblical learning takes place, and missional efforts and outreach are initiated

…all to support our mission to transform lives in Jesus Christ.

A: We want to create a welcoming physical space.  This is our guests’ first impression of Bethel.  By removing barriers such as outdated spaces, accessibility issues, and limited gathering areas, we will create an environment where visitors feel comfortable and cared for. When people feel welcome and at ease, they are more likely to return, build relationships, and encounter the transforming message of Christ.

A: Our vision is for Bethel to be a hub for community life—hosting events, outreach programs, concerts, and meetings that welcome neighbors. Improved facilities will give us more opportunities to invite the community in and build relationships that point people toward Christ.

A: The design preserves key historic architectural elements while updating spaces for safety, flexibility, and ministry effectiveness. We are rooted in tradition but committed to preparing for future generations, just as past generations prepared for us.

A: While our current facilities have served us well, they no longer fully meet the needs of today’s ministry or tomorrow’s opportunities. Currently our spaces are not up to code in regards to sprinklers, safety codes, ADA compliance, etc. In addition, if we do nothing, we risk limiting growth and ministry effectiveness.

A: The cost of upgrading the Children’s Ministry Building is more expensive than constructing new space. New construction will also provide better safety, design efficiency, and rooms for Sunday School, meeting spaces, and staff/ administrative offices.

A: This vision is not an either/or. Buildings are ministry tools that allow us to expand our mission reach. By improving our facilities, we strengthen the church’s ability to disciple, serve, bring people in and send people out into the community and the world.

Communication & Congregation Involvement

A: There will be a regular cadence of updates that will be delivered through worship announcements, bulletin boards, newsletters, emails, our website, and/ or social media. Stewardship is key to our communication strategy, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the campaign.

A: Yes. The first opportunity to ask questions will be at the Bethel Barn Bash (September 28th).  Following this event, members of the Capital Campaign team will be meeting with our many small groups and Sunday School classes.  We welcome open dialogue and feedback.

A: Yes. We will share renderings and provide information so everyone can see what is planned.  The first opportunity is at the congregation kickoff on September 28th .  Following this, we will have them posted around the church, printed in a brochure and accessible through our website.

A: Yes. While licensed professionals will handle most construction, members will have an opportunity to help with finishing touches, landscaping, and beautification.

Timeline

A: The most urgent need is the Children’s Ministry Wing, which must be ready by Fall 2026. This requirement shapes the timeline for construction.

A: The pledge period is three years, allowing members to give generously over time. Construction timelines will depend on funds received and renovation phases.

A: Construction is planned to start as early as February 2026.  This will enable the Children’s Ministry Wing to be ready for the Fall 2026 start, and for the Family Life Center and new Student Ministry space to be ready for the next phase.

Renovation Scope & Planning

A: The vision includes sanctuary renovations, updated children’s and youth areas, improved gathering spaces, technology upgrades, and accessibility enhancements. It also accounts for storage, office space, and modern infrastructure so that our ministries can flourish well into the future.  The Mechanical, Plumbing , HVAC , IT , Sound Attenuation, and Domestic Water and Fire Protection systems will all be upgraded throughout to aid in future reliability, adherence to safety codes, ADA compliance, and ease of maintenance. Wayfinding will be greatly enhanced so that the front entrance to Bethel can be identified from the street and so that when entering the building you will be able to find your way at  first glance.  The gathering area has a coffee shop and comfortable seating for small groups along with Internet Service. This will be a welcome mat to the community making a statement that Bethel is serving God by opening its doors to all.

A: Plans were developed through prayer, leadership discussions, and input from ministry teams and the Building Team, with professional guidance from architects and builders. This collaborative process ensures that the design reflects both practical needs and the mission of our church.

A: Guidance was given from Aspen Group. After receiving preliminary drawings from this group, the Build Team thought it would be beneficial to go with local architects and builders. We began working with Storey PM, WGM (architect) & Barringer Construction.

A: The Capital Campaign is being led by the Pastor, Campaign Chairs, Building Team, and volunteer committees, with support from Horizons Stewardship. This ensures both spiritual direction and professional guidance.

A: The team is chaired by Joe Roy. His team includes Randy Ford, Martha Landis, Beth Lester, and Olen Persons. We were saddened by the death of Tommy Knox during the process. His contributions, representing the historical aspects of Bethel were insightful and appreciated. These members represent diverse perspectives and areas of ministry.

A: The Session, in consultation with the Building Team and Finance Committee, has final authority. Decisions are prayerfully made with transparency and input from the congregation.

A:  Yes and No.  The Children’s Ministry Wing is Phase 1 and will begin as early as February with the intention of being completed in time for Fall 2026 enrollment.  Once phase 1 is complete, the remaining construction (Worship space, Gathering area, and Classroom / Administrative space) will likely need to take place together due to infrastructure dependencies and timing requirements.  The projected completion for all construction is September 2027.

A:  We are committed to honoring the legacy of those who came before us and intend to preserve, document, or respectfully relocate all memorials and historical elements.

A: Instead of a traditional library, we are planning flexible spaces that encourage discipleship, learning, and fellowship. These spaces will allow small groups, Bible studies, and classes to gather and grow. Study resources will still be available, but in ways that better serve today’s needs and the wide range of ages and interests in our congregation.

A: The new sanctuary will seat approximately 350 – 400 people. This should be adequate for current needs as well as future growth. In addition, the gathering space behind the pews could be used for special overflow needs.

A: Yes. Plans are to upgrade all systems, as needed, to enhance worship as well as the streaming of worship services.

A: Yes. Safe, modern, and age-appropriate children’s spaces are a top priority in the vision plan.

A: Bringing our youth ministry onto the main campus places them at the heart of our church family—closer to worship, more accessible, and more connected. The buildings across the street remain valuable assets. Session and committees will prayerfully explore future uses, which may include ministry programs, partnerships, or other community-serving purposes.

A: The clean, bright appearance will unify our campus and symbolize renewal as we step into this new season of ministry. Currently, we have multiple brick styles due to previous additions and renovations.  By using an overall white brick, we can bring all the buildings together.  In our current plans, we will also have some exposed brick within our new gathering space.

A:  Worship will continue, however, during phase I of construction our Modern service will be relocated to the Sanctuary, and during the next phase our Traditional service will be relocated to the Family Life Center.  We will make all efforts to minimize any other impacts.  If there are any, these will be communicated ahead of time.  Worship remains central to Bethel.

A: Temporary spaces will be designated to ensure continuity, safety, and minimal disruption. There is no plan for any ministry to stop during the construction phase.

A: Plans are to relocate the offices to the house across the street, Bethel Haven, during the construction phase.

A:  The kitchen area will not be affected.  The storage room will be slightly relocated and made closer to the kitchen. It will not be reduced in size.  The Family Life Center will be reclaimed as a sports gymnasium as well as include a new space for youth worship, learning, and fellowship.

A: The Parking lots will receive a facelift and be made more efficient.  Some areas may be temporarily affected, but signage and planning will minimize confusion for members and guests.

A: The contractor will follow strict safety protocols. Construction areas will be clearly marked and off-limits to the public.

A: The decision not to expand the Sanctuary seating was intentional. Bethel’s current capacity already meets the needs of our weekly worship attendance. Our goal is to keep Worship space seating at about 80% of maximum service attendance. This leaves room for growth without making the room feel empty week to week.

Should our attendance ever outgrow the space, we always have the option of adding additional services. In this way, we can continue to grow while being wise stewards of our resources.

Instead of adding more seats, the campaign focuses on enhancing the quality of the worship experience:

  • Improving accessibility for all worshipers

  • Updating technology for sound, streaming, and visuals

  • Enhancing lighting, seating, and acoustics

  • Preserving the Sanctuary’s sacred beauty while making it more functional

A:

The Gathering Space is intentionally designed to be spacious because this is where community happens. Unlike the Worship Space — where everyone is focused on the same thing at the same time — the Gathering Space must be large enough to serve multiple purposes simultaneously.

  • It needs to accommodate groups converging from different events (Sunday School, Worship, Small Groups, etc.).

  • It must provide space for a variety of activities happening at once: greeting a visitor, chatting over coffee, catching up with friends, or connecting with ministry leaders.

  • It should allow room for different groups — kids, teens, young parents, singles, and older members — to interact naturally at the same time in different ways.

Corporate worship requires much less personal space than social interaction does. A generous Gathering Space ensures that Bethel’s spirit of fellowship, welcome, and hospitality has room to flourish. It will also provide flexibility to host church and community events, receptions, meetings, and ministry activities that don’t require the full Sanctuary.

Finances & Stewardship

A: The estimated cost includes construction, furnishings, professional fees, and a contingency fund to handle unforeseen challenges. Final numbers will be shared transparently with the congregation as soon as we receive them from the architect and builder.

A: Through generous, above-and-beyond gifts from members and friends, along with possible grants or external contributions. Short-term financing will also be needed to bridge the gap between the start of construction and the collection of pledges (which will come in over the next three years), while longer-term financing may be needed, depending on the results of the Capital Campaign.  The goal will be to repay any debt quickly and responsibly.

A: If our initial campaign does not raise the total cost of the vision, we will secure a loan to complete it.  We may have future capital campaigns to raise funds for loan repayment.  The Bethel Finance Committee is currently studying options.

A: The use of excess funds will be determined by Session.

A: No. Missions remain a top priority. The building campaign is designed to complement—not compete with—our mission.

A: Competitive bids, leadership oversight, and transparent reporting will keep spending in check.  Our financial strategy is guided by principles of stewardship, ensuring that every contribution is used wisely and effectively to achieve our vision.

A: At Bethel, missions have always been a priority. Our annual budget continues to fund both local and worldwide missions. The Growing in Faith Campaign is not in competition with that—it’s about strengthening our home base. By creating safer, more welcoming, and more effective ministry spaces, we are better equipped to disciple people here and then send them out to serve Christ in the world.

A: We have worked closely with architects, contractors, and financial advisors to ensure these changes are both visionary and responsible. Some new systems (like modern HVAC and energy-efficient lighting) will help reduce costs. While there will be modest increases in maintenance and utilities, these will be manageable within our annual budget. The capital campaign itself is separate from our yearly operating expenses, which will continue to fund staff, ministry programs, and missions.

Giving & Participation

A: Yes. All pledges and donations will be kept confidential. Only Bethel’s Director of Finance will know your pledge amount (which is required for processing and your documentation). Your giving is between you and God.

A: Yes. We welcome any of these types of gifts. These types of gifts can provide flexibility based on your current situation.  Please contact the Director of Finance to assist.

A: No. It is a voluntary commitment that can be adjusted if your situation changes.

A: Yes. Simply notify our Director of Finance if adjustments are needed.

A: Yes. Early gifts are welcome and help with initial costs and momentum.

A:  Yes and no.  Our current focus is on contributions to the Capital Campaign. However, we will be hosting a fundraiser with our Bethel Weekday Preschool current family and alumni.  Depending on the results of the initial Capital campaign, additional campaigns or fundraisers may be organized.

A: It supports our mission to be a welcoming, Christ-centered, multi-generational congregation committed to Scripture and service. The vision provides facilities that foster worship, fellowship, and outreach, and aid in our mission to transform lives in Christ.

A: Prayer is the foundation. Every member is asked to pray daily for wisdom, unity, and generosity.  In addition to your continual prayers, we will have special prayer opportunities that we would love you to participate in.

A: Yes. Devotionals, prayer guides, and scripture reflections will be shared to keep our focus on God’s purpose.

A: No. It is about growing in faith, trusting in God’s provision, and uniting as a church family around His mission.

A: Our children and youth will be invited to pray, participate in age-appropriate projects, and learn about stewardship and generosity.

A: Renovating our facilities ensures Bethel remains a vital, welcoming, Christ-centered presence in Cornelius and the Lake Norman area. We are building today to bless the generations to come.

A: Every gift matters. Just as important are your prayers, encouragement, flexibility during construction, and willingness to invite others into the vision. God calls us to faithfulness, not comparison.

Weather Update

As forecast, we are getting a significant snowstorm today, which will create very hazardous driving conditions. Regretfully, as a result we need to cancel all church related activities for Sunday. This is for the safety of everyone involved. Be on the lookout for a prerecorded video from Pastor Aaron Sunday with a word of encouragement.

Additionally, with the freezing temperatures expected to continue through Sunday, we are closing the church office on Monday, February 2. As a reminder most of the staff will be at the national gathering in Atlanta during the week.

Please stay safe during the storm, and continue to check on your neighbors in need.
