What if medical science suddenly developed a pill that would infuse us with strength, wisdom, comfort, peace, and hope with just one convenient daily dose? We’d all be beating a path to our doctors’ doors asking for a prescription, wouldn’t we?
But here’s the good news, Friends. Our gracious Lord is way ahead of medical science. He’s already shown us that such a remedy has existed for centuries and that we don’t even need to reach out to our doctors to ask for it.
What is this amazing panacea? It’s the miraculous life-giving “medicine” of Scripture of course. Tucked into the glorious pages of Scripture we will find all that we’ll ever need to have the full, abundant life that our Lord promised in John 10:10. All that we need to do to tap into this amazing power is to follow a daily “regimen” of study. And guess what? Our lives will be forever transformed as Scripture permeates deep within and hides itself in our hearts.
Lent is a season of intense introspection into the life and work of our Lord Jesus Christ. How did He manage to triumph over the many obstacles that He encountered as He walked this fragile and broken earth? How did He shame the Enemy right back into the slimy black pit out of which he slithered following His forty days of testing in the wilderness? How was He able to withstand the unspeakable suffering of Gethsemane and Calvary so that He could purchase our pardon and thus restore us to perfect fellowship with our Heavenly Father?
We learn that the ancient words of Scripture sprang effortlessly to our Lord’s mind and from His lips in the hour of His greatest need. Did He just make those words up right on the spot? Was it an accident that those words became His source of strength, wisdom, comfort, peace, and hope when He needed it most?
I think we all know the answer to that question, don’t we? If immersing Himself daily in Scripture was enough to sustain our precious and mighty Redeemer to wrestle victoriously with the very powers of darkness and evil that would make captives of us all, just think of what it can and will do for us.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, please make me hunger and thirst to be filled with your holy Word and keep me mindful that nothing less will ever satisfy.
