Who We Are

Founded in 1828, Bethel Presbyterian Church has been a cornerstone of faith in the Cornelius area for nearly two centuries. Our congregation began when local families sought to make worship more accessible for those struggling with long trips on poor roadways to Hopewell or Ramah areas.
The first sanctuary, built in 1830 using member-donated lumber, served as our home until 1896 when we constructed our current brick sanctuary. The beautiful pulpit we still use today came from a creative fundraising initiative where members invested in raising chickens to fund its purchase.
Through times of national challenge, including both World Wars, and local transformation, such as the creation of Lake Norman in 1963, our congregation has remained steadfast in its faith and service. We continue to uphold our founding principles of faithful worship, generous stewardship, and nurturing spiritual growth in our area.
Our dedication to missions has been a defining characteristic of our church, from our historical work in Korea to our present-day service in Guatemala, where our members continue to share God’s love abroad. Since 1909, we’ve maintained a meaningful partnership with Cornelius Presbyterian Church, working together to spread God’s word throughout our region.
At Bethel Presbyterian, we take pride in being a welcoming church family where people gather to worship, learn, and serve together, carrying forward a legacy of faith that began nearly 200 years ago.
